What is IV Therapy?
Intravenous (IV) Therapy involves injecting combinations of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, homeopathics and botanicals directly into a person’s circulation system with a needle. Vitamins and minerals provide the basic materials necessary for our cells to function adequately. Usually we can get the nutrients from the food we eat. However, sometimes even a perfect diet may not translate to proper nutrition at the cellular level. There are many causes of this such as poor digestion, food sensitivities, chronic inflammation, decreased immune function, or any other sickness. A detrimental cycle takes place in which our cells are unhealthy and need nutrients to heal, but the nutrients are not available because our cells are too weak to transport the vitamins and minerals to where they are needed.
IV Therapy first began with a Baltimore physician, Dr. John Myers, MD, who formulated the Myers' Cocktail more than 30 years ago. This powerful solution contains a balanced combination of vitamins and minerals. By administering the solution I.V., it ensures maximum absorption since it directly enters the bloodstream. The Myers' Cocktail consists of vitamin C, magnesium, calcium, and vitamin B complex. Our naturopathic doctors will tailor each formula specifically for our patients. This may including adding varying amounts of vitamins, minerals, botanical herbs, homeopathics, and amino acids to the basic Myers' Cocktail. IV Therapy is a safe way to achieve the concentration levels necessary for many nutrients and is the most efficient method for treating nutritional shortcomings. IV Therapy also hydrates the body and detoxifies the liver and lymphatic system. In I.V. Therapy, the dose is high enough that the vitamins can actually enter the cells without using cellular energy. The advantage of I.V. administration is that the nutrients bypass the stomach and liver for metabolism and go directly to the bloodstream where they are needed.
In some case intramuscular injections are required to correct nutrient deficiencies. In this case, a needle in inserted directly into a large muscle. Vitamin B12 injections are mostly know for this type of therapy.
All of the above therapies allows the cells to quickly repair, regain strength, and begin to function normally again.
How many treatments are required?
Patients vary in the number of treatments needed. Some patients experience improvement after only 3 treatments, and many report significant healing by the 5th or 6th infusion. Patients who have long standing conditions may need ongoing treatment of several I.V.'s per week, or periodically every few weeks or month.
What can I expect?
Your "individualized" formula will be mixed and it will be infused slowly over a period of about 30-60 minutes while you rest and relax.
Is it safe?
I.V. Therapy is safe, effective, and a minimally invasive therapy that is well tolerated by most patients. It carries a low risk of serious adverse side effects. If the solution is administered too quickly, there may be a sensation of warmth, which is due to the rapid rise of magnesium. Some patients may also notice the taste of vitamins in their mouth shortly after the infusion is started, but this can be reduced by eating a snack and drinking water before coming in for an I.V. It is also important to drink plenty of water before, during and after the infusion.
